Peter Obi: Tinubu’s Certificate Saga Taints Nigeria’s Global Image

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, expressed his worry regarding the recent identity controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s CSU credentials. He emphasized that this issue had harmed Nigeria’s global reputation.

In Abuja, Obi said, “The prolonged identity debate and doubts about President Tinubu’s CSU credentials deeply trouble me. The media’s intense focus on this issue has placed Nigerians in a tough spot, as they frequently defend the nation’s credibility.”

He further noted that these controversies don’t just harm Nigeria’s image. They also cast a shadow of distrust over every Nigerian. “Sadly, many now view Nigerians with suspicion due to this avoidable controversy,” he added.

Coming third in the polls as per INEC, Obi called on President Tinubu to clear the air. “President Tinubu needs to be transparent about his background, education, and any name changes. This goes beyond politics; it’s about our national leadership’s integrity.”

Moreover, he touched on the topic of identity. He highlighted global leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, who lacked formal education, underscoring the value of honesty over academic milestones.

In response to Obi’s statements, the APC declared that President Tinubu faces no identity issues. According to a report by the Independent, Felix Morka, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, spoke after Obi’s press conference. He confirmed that Tinubu’s identity is familiar to the 8.9 million Nigerians who voted for him in 2023.

“President Tinubu’s advocacy for democracy and justice has spanned over three decades,” Morka said. “From his roles at ExxonMobil to his tenure as Lagos State governor, his credentials are transparent.”

Regarding Tinubu’s CSU records, Morka was clear. The university has repeatedly verified Tinubu’s attendance and his graduation with honors. “It’s sad that figures like Obi and Atiku Abubakar continue to publicize these allegations despite their legal resolution.”

He wrapped up by underlining the democratic system’s core principle. The presidency is determined by the people’s choice, referring to the election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 25, 2023.
