The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has removed its former president, Alh. Tajudeen Baruwa, from office over allegations of misconduct and mismanagement. The union’s caretaker committee, led by Alh. Tajudeen Agbede, announced the decision at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.
Agbede said the committee had the mandate of the union’s members in various states and zones to pass a vote of no confidence on Baruwa, whose tenure expired on Aug. 28. He accused Baruwa of committing many atrocities during his four-year term as the president of NURTW, one of the largest and most influential transport unions in Nigeria.
According to Agbede, Baruwa reduced the union’s membership in the International Transport Federation (ITF) from 400,000 to 160,000 members and failed to pay affiliation dues, resulting in the union’s deregistration from ITF.
He also alleged that Baruwa did not account for the money paid by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the union’s services during the 2023 general election. Agbede further claimed that Baruwa violated the union’s constitution by holding only four National Executive Council (NEC) meetings in four years and refusing to conduct a credible zonal delegates election for the continuity of the union.
He added that Baruwa arbitrarily posted union staff without paying them relocation allowances or transfer claims, causing them unnecessary hardship and adversity. Agbede said the caretaker committee was determined to restore the dignity and integrity of the union and ensure a smooth transition to a new leadership.
He appealed to all members of NURTW to remain calm and peaceful and support the committee in its efforts to reposition the union for greater service delivery. Baruwa has not responded to the allegations or the removal as of the time of writing this report. The NURTW has been embroiled in leadership crises and internal conflicts for several years, leading to violence and loss of lives among its members and rival factions.
The union plays a vital role in Nigeria’s transport sector, providing employment and income for millions of drivers, conductors, mechanics, and other workers. The union also has a significant political influence, as it mobilizes its members and supporters to vote for candidates of their choice during elections.
The NURTW hopes to overcome its challenges and emerge stronger and more united under a new leadership that will uphold its values and vision.
