AFCON 2023: Nigeria’s Super Eagles Confront Goalkeeper Crisis

Published on

Ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, Nigeria’s Super Eagles grapple with a persistent goalkeeper dilemma. Historically, Nigeria boasted elite goalkeepers, including Peter Rufai, Best Ogedengbe, Ike Shorunmu, Alloy Agu, and Vincent Enyeama. Particularly, Enyeama held his post as the team’s premier goalkeeper for over a decade until his 2015 retirement.

However, since Enyeama’s departure, the team has struggled to find a successor. Various goalkeepers, including Dele Alampasu, Oladele Ajiboye, Daniel Akpeyi, Carl Ikeme, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Maduka Okoye, and Francis Uzoho have been trialed, but none have won the unwavering support of fans or cemented their place in Nigerian football history.

Daily Post reported that the challenge intensifies as AFCON 2023 looms. For the recent international friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique, head coach Jose Peseiro called up Uzoho from Omonia, Olorunleke Ojo from Enyimba, Adebayo Adeleye from Hapoel Jerusalem, and Okoye from Udinese.

In the 2023 AFCON draw, Nigeria is in a group with Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau. Still, victory seems uncertain with the evident goalkeeping vulnerabilities.

Reminders of past failures resonate. Daniel Akpeyi’s positioning was heavily criticized during Nigeria’s 2019 AFCON loss to Algeria. Likewise, Okoye’s oversight was blamed for the 2022 AFCON defeat against Tunisia. Similarly, Uzoho’s mistake was detrimental to Nigeria’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification attempt against Ghana. He faced further criticism during recent friendlies with Saudi Arabia and Mozambique.

Yet Peseiro has backed Uzoho, suggesting the widespread criticism from Nigerians affects the goalkeepers’ confidence. He asserts that improvements in training can address these issues.

Audu Ojo, head coach of Dawaki Rangers, emphasized the significance of legacy and learning for goalkeepers. Ojo points out the holistic nature of the sport, stressing that while a good goalkeeper is pivotal, so is a solid defense. Reflecting on Uzoho’s performance, he expressed confidence in Uzoho’s potential, given the right guidance and support.

As AFCON 2023 approaches, it remains to be seen if the Super Eagles can solidify their goalkeeping position and make a significant impact in the tournament.
