Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has taken a delightful leap into the world of children’s literature with her latest book, ‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’. The book was unveiled at an enchanting event, ‘Christmas Magic with Chimamanda’, on December 29, 2023, drawing attention from notable personalities including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who participated via telecast. This event not only celebrated the release of the book but also highlighted the importance of fostering children’s imaginations through storytelling.

‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’ is a heartwarming tale centered around a young girl named Chino. Through her playful experiences with her mother’s vibrant scarf, Chino embarks on a journey of cultural discovery, understanding the richness of her family’s traditions and the limitless possibilities of imagination. Published by Harper Collins in the UK and US in September 2023, and later in Nigeria by Narrative Landscape Press in October 2023, the book signifies Adichie’s first venture into children’s literature and marks her much-anticipated return to book launches in Nigeria after several years.

Adichie, whose reputation was previously cemented by critically acclaimed works like ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ and ‘Americanah’, shared her aspiration to create a book that resonates with the essence of her own childhood. She aimed to celebrate the unique bond shared between a mother and her child. Furthermore, Adichie addressed the decline in reading culture in Nigeria, highlighting the critical role of reading in developing analytical thinking. She urged parents to lead by example in cultivating a reading habit, emphasizing that even reading a page a day can have transformative effects.

Former President Obasanjo spoke about the importance of gaining wisdom through reading, while Prof. Osinbajo commended Adichie for her ability to engage and inspire young minds. Other distinguished guests, including Ms. Bella Disu, Mr. Hakeem Belo-Osagie, and Ms. Munachi Mbonu, reflected on the profound impact of literature on personal development and societal growth.

‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’ has received widespread acclaim from various international publications. The Washington Post praised it as “a children’s book that transcends beyond mere joy”, while The Guardian UK described it as “a picture book rich with imaginative adventures”. Ebony Magazine acknowledged it as “a heartfelt narrative about familial bonds and adventures”.

The book has garnered notable recognition, featuring in Brittle Paper’s ‘100 Notable African Books of 2023’, and receiving accolades from The Guardian Nigeria. It has been hailed for its universal appeal, touching readers of all ages with its poignant message and captivating storytelling.

Adichie’s latest work showcases her versatility and innate talent as a storyteller. ‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’ is now available globally in bookstores and online, promising to spread joy, laughter, and inspiration to a diverse audience.

This book launch and Adichie’s foray into children’s literature represent a significant contribution to the genre. It stands as a testament to her commitment to enriching the literary landscape and fostering a love for reading among the younger generation.

‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’ is not just a book; it’s a gateway to a world where imagination knows no bounds, where cultural heritage is celebrated, and where the bond between a mother and child is beautifully explored. It is a must-read for children and adults alike, offering a fresh perspective and a heartwarming experience.
