Zoning Politics: Edo State Governorship Aspirant Speaks Out

Published on

Anamero Dekeri, a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, has faulted the issue of zoning in politics. He said it breeds incompetence and entitlement, and urged Nigerians to choose leaders based on their competence and skills.

Zoning and its implications

Zoning is the practice of allocating political positions to different regions or ethnic groups in a country. It is often used to ensure fair representation and balance power among diverse groups.

However, Dekeri, who represents the Etsako Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said zoning limits the pool of qualified candidates and undermines meritocracy. He argued that zoning does not guarantee good governance or development, and cited the examples of previous governors from the central and north senatorial districts of Edo State.

He said the APC, which is the main opposition party in the state, is not concerned about zoning, but about winning the governorship election and delivering on its promises to the people.

The 2024 Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed September 21, 2024, for the governorship election in Edo State. The APC has slated its primary for February 17, 2024.

Dekeri is one of the aspirants vying for the party’s ticket. He said he has the experience, vision, and passion to lead the state to greater heights.

He said his vision for Edo State is one of progress, prosperity, and pride. Dereki said he plans to create an environment where every child has access to quality education, the youth are equipped with skills for the future, and the industries flourish, generating employment and driving economic growth.

Dekeri also that he would work together with the stakeholders to eradicate corruption, create a conducive business environment, and ensure that the benefits of democracy reach every corner of the state.

He said Edo State is a diverse tapestry of cultures, and he embraces this diversity as a source of strength. Dekeri stated that his administration will foster unity, building bridges and creating an atmosphere where every citizen feels a sense of belonging and contributes to the collective progress of the state.

A Call for Change

Dekeri said the current administration led by Governor Godwin Obaseki has failed to deliver on its mandate and has plunged the state into a state of decay.

He said the state needs a change of leadership that will restore its glory and dignity. He said the APC is the party that can bring about this change, and he is the candidate that can make it happen.

Obaseki appealed to the people of Edo State to support his aspiration and vote for the APC in the 2024 governorship election. He said he is confident that with their support, he will emerge victorious and usher in a new era of transformation and development for Edo State.
