Governor Otti Stresses Peace and Dialogue on Remembrance Day

Published on

In a moving address marking the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Umuahia, Abia State Governor Alex Otti reflected on the Nigerian Civil War, suggesting that it could have been avoided through the power of reason and dialogue at critical junctures. His words, laden with the weight of history, resonated during the solemn occasion as he recounted the events leading up to the war and its tragic consequences.

Governor Otti lamented the immense loss of life during the Civil War, particularly among innocent, non-combatant populations including women, children, and the elderly. He underscored that the bloodshed constitutes a long-standing stain on Nigeria’s history, one that should not be minimized or overlooked. However, he also recognized the swift efforts at reconciliation and reintegration initiated by the military, describing these actions as a redeeming gesture in the aftermath of the conflict.

Highlighting a significant takeaway from the Civil War, Otti emphasized the crucial role of constructive dialogue in nation-building, especially during periods of political uncertainty. He expressed disappointment over the frequent disregard for the sacrifices of servicemen and women, whose efforts in blood, sweat, and tears have often been undermined by divisive actions and rhetoric.

In his speech, Governor Otti acknowledged the myriad of challenges facing the nation, including domestic insecurity and a growing sense of uncertainty. He stressed that these issues should not distract from the daily sacrifices made by military personnel in their ongoing efforts to ensure national stability.

The governor paid tribute to the infinite debt owed to Nigeria’s servicemen and women, both past and present. He highlighted their relentless efforts in confronting various internal disturbances ranging from terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping to economic sabotage, including crude oil theft and illegal mining. Otti praised their unwavering commitment to tackling these challenges and preserving national unity.

Remarking on the over half a century of military dedication since the end of the Nigeria-Biafra civil war, Otti noted that the armed forces have consistently demonstrated courage in protecting the nation’s economic and social interests. He applauded their example of brotherhood, transcending ethnic, cultural, or religious backgrounds.

Governor Otti concluded his address with a call for national gratitude towards the military for their role in Nigeria’s history and life. He urged those inciting division and hate to cease their actions in the interest of the country’s unity and stability. The governor’s message, delivered on a day of remembrance, served as a powerful reminder of the lessons from the past and the ongoing need for dialogue, understanding, and unity in Nigeria’s journey forward.
