Explosion Rocks Ibadan, Raising Fears and Questions

Published on

The city of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, was gripped by fear yesterday following a massive explosion that shook most parts of the city. The source and cause of the explosion remain unclear, with unconfirmed reports of casualties stirring anxiety among the residents.

The blast, which occurred in the evening, was powerful enough to blow out windows in various locations, including a pharmacy and a restaurant. The extent of the damage and the number of casualties are still unknown as authorities continue their investigations.

According to a report by Vanguard, the explosion was felt across major parts of Ibadan and its outskirts. Residents of areas such as Ologuneru, Owalla, Isokan, Ekerin, Eleyele, and parts of Apete reported feeling the ground shake. At Ologuneru, the force of the explosion shook gates and fences but did not cause any collapses.

Conflicting reports have emerged about the nature of the explosion. Residents shared varied experiences, with some feeling a heavy thud on the ground while others thought something had hit their houses. The confusion and fear were palpable as people scrambled to understand what had happened.

The impact of the blast was also felt in areas like Olodo, Apata, Iyana Church, Sango, Agbowo, Bodija Housing, and others. In Bodija Housing Estate, a popular mall suffered significant damage, with all its roofs collapsing. This incident led to looting by some hoodlums who took advantage of the chaos. A resident from the Adeyi area of Bodija reported hearing a loud explosion, but this account, along with reports of casualties, could not be immediately verified.

The blast wave reportedly affected houses and cars, even far from the explosion site. A resident described hearing a loud bang and seeing the destruction of Dominos and Ace Mall in Bodija. Amidst the chaos, patients at the University College Hospital (UCH) were seen running out in confusion, as reported by one of the nurses.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Mr. Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident, stating that the cause of the explosion was unknown and that no casualties had been confirmed. The Commissioner of Police, along with senior officers, was on the ground for an on-the-spot assessment and rescue operation. Security personnel were deployed to maintain order.

The Special Adviser on Security to the Governor, Fatai Owoseni, revealed that the state government is overseeing rescue efforts and has assured that medical bills for any victims will be covered. Lighting equipment and cranes are being arranged to aid the rescue operations. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the explosion, with emergency responders, including fire service operatives, deployed to the scene.

Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Mr Dotun Oyelade, described the incident as an uncommon explosion. He assured that the state government is fully in control and working to mitigate the impact. Governor Seyi Makinde has called for calm and reassured citizens that their safety is being prioritized.

As investigations continue into this mysterious explosion, the people of Ibadan await answers and hope for a swift resolution to this alarming incident.
