ICPC and FIRS Join Forces to Combat Financial Tax Frauds

Published on

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) have initiated discussions to strengthen their efforts in tackling financial tax frauds and corruption-related issues.

During a recent visit to the FIRS Headquarters in Abuja, ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Aliyu, SAN, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two agencies to enhance their anti-corruption initiatives.

Dr. Aliyu highlighted three key areas of collaboration aimed at addressing corruption, particularly in tax-related matters. First, he stressed the importance of information sharing and technology integration to detect potential corruption or fraudulent activities related to taxation.

He explained, “You have the expertise on tax, and we have the mandate to prevent corruption, so I believe effective collaboration would help identify and address fraudulent practices within the tax system.”

The second area of focus is joint investigation and legal reforms. Dr. Aliyu pointed out that corruption often involves tax evasion and other fraudulent methods, making it essential for ICPC and FIRS to work together in this regard.

The third area is capacity building, as Dr. Aliyu emphasized the need for training programs and skill enhancement for staff from both organizations. He highlighted that such training would help in detecting and preventing corruption related to the tax system in Nigeria.

Chairman of FIRS, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, expressed his optimism about the collaboration and welcomed ICPC’s interest in helping address tax-related frauds. He emphasized the importance of technology and partnership in improving enforcement and revenue generation efforts.

Dr. Adedeji stated, “I am hopeful and optimistic that we will collaborate effectively, and I am particularly delighted that with your support, our enforcement mandate on tax matters will improve. We will also develop a framework and use technology to enhance revenue generation, benefiting not only individual agencies but the federal government as a whole.”
