Customs and NAFDAC Join Forces, Eradicate Unfit Goods in Landmark Operation

Published on

In a significant operation against illegal smuggling activities, the Nigeria Custom Service (NCS) Area Command covering Sokoto and Zamfara States recently destroyed a large quantity of contraband drugs and food items. These items, deemed unfit for human consumption and worth millions of naira, were ceremoniously disposed of in an effort to protect public health and uphold national laws.

The operation, led by the Controller of Custom for the area, Musa Omale, was conducted in accordance with Section 245 of the NCS Act 2023, which empowers the Service to seize goods that contravene customs and excise laws. The destruction of these goods was witnessed by representatives from various security agencies including the Nigerian Army, Immigration Service, and officials from the Agency for Food and Drugs Administrative and Control (NAFDAC).

Omale, addressing the media and observers during the event, emphasized the importance of the Customs Service’s role as the nation’s border guardian. He issued a stern warning to smugglers, highlighting the detrimental impact of their activities on the health of Nigerians, the economy, and the country’s overall development. He reassured the public of the Service’s unwavering commitment to preventing the entry and distribution of goods harmful to human health and the economy.

NAFDAC Coordinator in the state, Garba Abubakar Adamu, lauded the Customs Service for its support in combating the influx of unregistered food items and drugs. Adamu clarified that any food items or drugs lacking NAFDAC scrutiny, registration, and approval are automatically considered unfit for human consumption due to unguaranteed quality and safety.

The Customs Command’s Public Relations Officer, AT Abubakar, released a statement post the destruction exercise, explaining that the disposal of these items by destruction was a measure of last resort. The items destroyed included unregistered Tomato Paste, Condensed Milk, Alfakher Shisha, Ginjar Tea, Maggi, and other products. Abubakar’s statement stressed that these were unregistered smuggled items that NAFDAC had certified unfit for human consumption.

This operation is part of a broader effort by Nigerian authorities to clamp down on smuggling activities that pose a threat to public health and safety. The collaboration between the Nigeria Custom Service and NAFDAC is a critical component in safeguarding the country’s borders against the illegal entry of potentially harmful products.

The destruction of these contraband goods sends a strong message to those involved in the smuggling of unregulated products into Nigeria. It underscores the government’s resolve to protect its citizens from the dangers of consuming unverified and potentially harmful products. This operation also highlights the importance of inter-agency cooperation in effectively addressing complex challenges at the national borders.

The Nigerian government’s proactive measures in this regard are crucial in maintaining public health standards and supporting the country’s economic stability. The Customs Service, in its vigilant role, continues to be an essential frontline defense against the illegal importation of goods that do not meet the required health and safety standards.

In conclusion, the joint operation by the Nigeria Custom Service and NAFDAC in Sokoto and Zamfara States represents a significant step in the fight against illegal smuggling. The destruction of these multimillion-naira worth of contraband goods not only protects public health but also reinforces the government’s commitment to upholding the law and safeguarding the nation’s economic interests. This event is a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between different government agencies in tackling national challenges and ensuring the well-being of the citizens.
