Tinubu to Super Eagles: Step Up Your Game in AFCON

Published on

The Nigerian President has challenged the national football team to improve their performance and advance to the final stages of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

President’s Message

Bola Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Super Eagles’ showing in the group stage of the AFCON tournament. He urged the players to step up their game and impress him more in the knockout rounds.

The President’s message was delivered by the Minister of Sports, John Enoh, who spoke to the players via Zoom on Wednesday night in Abidjan. Enoh said the President was watching their matches and had high expectations for them.

“I had a meeting with the President yesterday. I went to the villa for something else and the President cornered me and said we (Eagles) managed to qualify and I said that’s how we are going to keep going until we win the tournament,” Enoh said.

“He said that I should tell the players that he wasn’t too impressed with the last match but he knows that now that they are off the group stages, they are going to impress him more.”

Cameroon Challenge

The Super Eagles will face their arch-rivals, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, in the last 16 of the tournament on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet -Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. The match is expected to be a tough and thrilling encounter, as both teams have a history of fierce competition and mutual respect.

Cameroon are the defending champions of the AFCON, having won the title in 2022 in their home soil. They have also won the trophy five times in total, making them the second most successful team in the history of the tournament, behind Egypt.

Nigeria, on the other hand, has won the AFCON three times, the last time being in 2013 in South Africa. They have also reached the final four times, losing to Cameroon in three of them. The Super Eagles are eager to avenge their past defeats and prove their superiority over their neighbors.

Team Captain’s Response

Ahmed Musa, the captain of the Super Eagles, thanked the sports minister for relaying the President’s message. He also called on the President to come and see them play live, saying it would serve as a motivation to the players.

“We appreciate the President’s concern and support. We will do our best to improve our performance and reach the final of the tournament,” Musa said.

“The team also want to appeal to the President to come and watch us play live. It will be a great honor and a boost for us to see him in the stadium. We promise to give him a good show and a good result.”

The Super Eagles have a talented and young squad, with some of the players making their debut in the AFCON. They have shown glimpses of brilliance and potential, but also some inconsistency and lack of experience. They will need to overcome their weaknesses and play with more confidence and cohesion to achieve their goal of winning the AFCON.

The Super Eagles have a loyal and passionate fan base, both at home and abroad, who are rooting for them and cheering them on. They also have the support and goodwill of the government and the people of Nigeria, who are proud of their achievements and hopeful for their future.
