Gunmen Kill Traditional Ruler in Kwara, Abduct Wife, Two Others

Published on

In a distressing development from Kwara State, gunmen have escalated the recent wave of violence against traditional rulers by attacking the palace of the Olukoro of Koro in Ekiti local government area. The assault, which occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, resulted in the tragic death of the town’s monarch, General Segun Aremu (rtd), and the abduction of his wife and two others. This incident has intensified concerns over the safety of traditional leaders in Nigeria, following closely on the heels of the killing of two traditional rulers in neighboring Ekiti State.

The Kwara State Government, led by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, swiftly responded to the incident with a statement expressing condemnation of the attack and a promise of swift justice. The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rafiu Ajakaye, conveyed the administration’s stance, highlighting the governor’s directive for security agencies to deploy all necessary resources to apprehend the perpetrators, secure the release of the abductees, and bring those responsible to justice.

Governor AbdulRazaq extended his deepest condolences to the people of Koro, acknowledging the profound impact of this loss on the community. He emphasized the state’s commitment to ensuring that this heinous act would be the perpetrators’ last against humanity. The murder of Oba Segun Aremu-Cole and the abduction of his wife have cast a shadow over Koro Ekiti, a town that lies close to the border with Kogi State, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the region.

The attack on the traditional ruler’s palace has not only left the community in mourning but has also raised alarm over the increasing insecurity facing traditional authorities in Nigeria. The incident, occurring just days after the murder of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State, has prompted a broader discussion on the safety of monarchs and their communities, as well as the measures needed to protect them from such violent acts.

The Kwara State Government’s acknowledgment of the attack and its commitment to addressing the issue is a crucial step towards restoring peace and security in the region. However, the continuous targeting of traditional rulers highlights a disturbing trend that demands a coordinated and robust response from both state and national levels.

As the investigation continues and efforts to rescue the abducted individuals are underway, the people of Koro, along with the wider Nigerian public, await decisive action to prevent future attacks on their leaders and ensure the safety of all citizens. The loss of General Segun Aremu (rtd) is a stark reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s traditional institutions and the critical role of government and security forces in safeguarding the nation’s cultural heritage and community leaders.
