In a landmark move aimed at enhancing the role of women in Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled four pivotal projects under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (P-BAT) Cares for Nigerian Women initiative. This announcement, made in Abuja during the commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD), underscores the administration’s recognition of women as crucial drivers of national development.
The President articulated a vision where the inclusion of women transcends mere participation, highlighting their role as central figures in the country’s economic dynamics. He emphasized that women, who contribute significantly to consumer spending in Nigeria, possess the unique capability to invigorate the nation with hope, peace, and love, likening their impact to that of the sun’s radiance.
This initiative introduces the e-market portal, National Women Helpline, Naira Save Nigeria Integrity and Transparency Brigade, and the Nigeria be Informed National Broadcast Channel, each designed to leverage the economic potential of women. By fostering an environment where women’s contributions are acknowledged and valued, these projects aim to catalyze rapid economic growth with women at the helm.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by existing social norms and policies that impede women’s advancement, President Tinubu affirmed a broad commitment to enhancing women’s economic capacity nationwide, especially among the most vulnerable groups. This commitment is rooted in the belief that unlocking women’s economic power is key to the country’s prosperity.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, and Beatrice Eyong, representing the UN Women for Nigeria and the ECOWAS, echoed the President’s sentiments, advocating for heightened investment in women. They highlighted the broader benefits of women’s empowerment, not only as a matter of economic necessity but also as a fundamental human right.
Traditional rulers, including Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, also voiced their support for the initiative, recognizing women’s indispensable role in societal development and urging for transparency and extended outreach in program implementation.
In parallel events across Nigeria, notable figures and organizations voiced their support for gender equality and women’s empowerment. In Benin City, the wife of the Edo State governor, Betsy Obaseki, urged women to aspire to leadership positions and actively participate in politics. Similarly, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Ondo State called for increased female representation in government, highlighting the link between gender diversity and effective governance.
Amid these endorsements, a governorship aspirant from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Wale Akinterinwa, lauded women’s contributions to society, advocating for greater acknowledgment and support of their roles.
These collective voices amplify a national call to action, underscoring the indispensability of women in fostering a prosperous and equitable Nigeria. By integrating women’s economic empowerment into national development strategies, the P-BAT Cares for Nigerian Women initiative not only celebrates women but positions them as pivotal actors in Nigeria’s journey towards sustainable development. This holistic approach, combining policy intervention with societal support, embodies a promising pathway towards dismantling the barriers that hinder women’s progress and unleashing their full potential for the benefit of all.
