A wave of shock and outrage has swept through Delta State, Nigeria, following the brutal killings of four military officers and 13 soldiers in the Okuama community. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has responded with a firm hand, demanding the full cooperation of traditional rulers in apprehending the perpetrators.
Condemnation and a Vow for Justice
In a forceful address to the Delta State Traditional Rulers’ Council Secretariat in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori condemned the attack in no uncertain terms. Describing it as “barbaric, inhumane, and unacceptable,” he vowed to bring those responsible to justice. “Those people who committed that evil act must face the wrath of the law,” he declared.
Governor Oborevwori outlined a series of actions he had taken since the attack. He detailed meetings with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Chief of Army Staff, and other high-ranking security officials. These meetings aimed to ensure a coordinated response and secure a commitment to a thorough investigation.
The governor emphasized his commitment to upholding the rule of law. He assured the traditional rulers that “innocent people will not be victimised.” However, he issued a stern warning: “No kingdom should shield those criminals because Delta State is governed by the tenets of the law and human decency.”
HRM Maj. Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (retd), Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, pledged the council’s support for the governor’s efforts. Recognizing the interconnectedness of local and national security, he emphasized, “The security of various kingdoms would dovetail to the security of the state and the nation.”
Seeking Peace and Preventing Further Violence
Governor Oborevwori didn’t stop at seeking cooperation in the investigation. He also issued a passionate plea for peace within the state. He condemned rumors of potential inter-communal conflicts, urging citizens to prioritize development over violence.
“What are they fighting for?” he questioned. “I have promised you people that I am going to do more for Deltans, so what are they fighting for?”
The governor emphasized the importance of open communication and collaboration. He encouraged the traditional rulers to report any information regarding the suspects to the authorities and avoid politicizing the issue. He assured them that the military would not take unilateral action in communities, further emphasizing his commitment to protecting innocent civilians.
Moving Beyond the Immediate Crisis
The Delta State government’s response to the killings highlights the complex web of challenges surrounding security in Nigeria. Governor Oborevwori’s call for cooperation from traditional rulers is a crucial step in ensuring a thorough investigation and preventing further violence. However, the long-term solution requires addressing the root causes of conflict in the region.
Open communication, fostering trust between communities and authorities, and investment in development projects are all essential elements in building lasting peace and security. While the immediate focus is on finding the perpetrators of the attack, the Delta State government must also prioritize long-term solutions to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
