Lagos Governor and Senator Push for Ikorodu-Itokin Road Dualization

Published on

In a move aimed at bolstering economic activity and improving traffic flow, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Senator Adetokunbo Abiru of Lagos East Senatorial District have joined forces to advocate for the urgent dualization of the Ikorodu-Itokin Road.

A Road in Need of Improvement

The Ikorodu-Itokin Road, a vital artery connecting Lagos to other parts of Nigeria, was originally constructed in 1975 by Messr. Taylor Woodrow during the military regimes of Generals Yakubu Gowon and Mobolaji Johnson. However, the road has remained a single-carriageway for nearly five decades, despite the significant increase in traffic volume over the years. This has resulted in frequent congestion and safety hazards for motorists.

Recognizing the road’s critical role in the economic growth of Nigeria, Senator Abiru championed its rehabilitation in the Nigerian Senate in April 2021. He highlighted the importance of the Ikorodu-Itokin Road in bridging the nation’s infrastructure gap and fostering economic development. The road serves as a key passage for vehicles traveling from Lagos to Ogun, Edo, and the northern regions of the country. It also provides access to the Lekki-Epe corridor, a rapidly developing area known for its refinery, deep seaport, and free trade zone facilities.

Renewed Push for Dualization and Positive Developments

During a recent courtesy visit to the Minister of Works, Governor Sanwo-Olu and Senator Abiru reiterated the urgent need for the Ikorodu-Itokin Road’s dualization. They emphasized the positive impact the project would have on the economic well-being of Lagos State and the nation as a whole.

The Minister responded positively to their requests, assuring them that design work for the road’s dualization would commence soon. This news comes as a welcome relief to residents and motorists who have long endured the challenges of the single-carriageway road.

The ongoing rehabilitation efforts, which include stabilization measures, have already yielded significant improvements for commuters. Residents along the route report that travel times between Itamaga and Itokin Bridge have decreased dramatically, from two hours to less than 30 minutes. This marked improvement highlights the importance of continued investment in infrastructure projects.

Commendations for Presidential Support

Governor Sanwo-Olu and Senator Abiru took the opportunity to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for his unwavering support in completing the ongoing rehabilitation of the Ikorodu-Itokin Road. They also expressed their appreciation for the President’s commitment to advancing critical road infrastructure projects across Nigeria. These advancements are essential for fostering economic growth and creating a more connected nation.

The calls for the Ikorodu-Itokin Road’s dualization reflect a broader recognition of the need for improved infrastructure in Nigeria. By investing in transportation networks, the government can stimulate economic activity, improve safety for motorists, and create a more efficient flow of goods and services throughout the country. With the design work set to begin soon, residents of Lagos and surrounding areas can look forward to a more modern and efficient Ikorodu-Itokin Road in the near future.
