Delta State Rallies Behind Pipeline Security Company

Published on

Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL), a company tasked with safeguarding oil pipelines in Delta State, is facing scrutiny over its performance. However, a chorus of support has emerged from local experts, community leaders, and Delta State government officials, defending PINL’s record and urging continued collaboration.

Accusations of Underperformance Prompt Rebuttals

Recent allegations have cast doubt on PINL’s effectiveness in curbing pipeline vandalism. These accusations have sparked concern within the industry, with some questioning the company’s suitability for the critical role. However, PINL has received strong backing from various stakeholders in Delta State.

Pipeline security experts have pointed to a significant decrease in pipeline breaches since PINL took over surveillance duties in 2015. Dr. Hosanna Williams, a prominent environmental consultant who formerly served the Delta State government, highlighted this positive trend. She argued that the decline in vandalism has directly translated to increased crude oil production in the region. Dr. Williams dismissed the accusations against PINL as unfounded, attributing them to envy and urging the federal government to maintain its trust in the company.

Economic Benefits Underscored by Government Officials

Mr. Griftson Omatsuli, Special Adviser to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized the economic benefits associated with PINL’s operations. He explained that improved pipeline security has led to a rise in oil revenue for Delta State. Omatsuli condemned attempts to discredit PINL, suggesting they are part of a larger effort to disrupt the federal government’s economic development plans in the Niger Delta region. He expressed his support for PINL, praising their contribution to the “Renewed Hope” agenda, a federal initiative aimed at boosting economic opportunities in the region.

Community Leaders Applaud PINL’s Positive Impact

Community leaders echoed the government’s sentiments. Chief Sylvester Tiebebedigha, coordinator of the Eweregbene community located along a major pipeline, spoke highly of PINL’s positive impact. He credited the company with creating local employment opportunities and improving environmental conditions by significantly reducing oil spills. Chief Tiebebedigha vehemently rejected claims of PINL’s inefficiency, highlighting the drastic improvement in his community’s well-being since the company began operations. He recalled the challenges faced by the community prior to PINL’s involvement, including limited job opportunities and environmental degradation caused by frequent oil spills.

Despite the accusations, PINL is expected to retain its pipeline surveillance contract. The company has not publicly addressed the specific allegations of underperformance. However, they likely point to the decrease in vandalism and the endorsements from local stakeholders as evidence of their success.

The Road Ahead: Balancing Transparency and Security

The situation surrounding PINL underscores the delicate balance between transparency and security in the oil and gas industry. While concerns regarding performance must be addressed, maintaining effective pipeline security is crucial for the economic well-being of Delta State and the nation as a whole. Moving forward, open communication between PINL, the government, and local communities will be essential to ensure transparency and continued progress in safeguarding Nigeria’s oil pipelines.
