Invalid LASU Degree Certificate Surfaces at Suya Stand

Published on

In an unexpected twist, a degree certificate from Lagos State University (LASU) was discovered at a local ‘suya’ spot in Lagos, sparking widespread attention and concern among the public and academic community. The university management quickly responded to the viral social media frenzy, clarifying the circumstances surrounding the certificate’s validity and public appearance.

Detailed Clarification from LASU Management

The university revealed that the certificate in question had been issued with a critical error—a misspelling of the graduate’s surname, which rendered it invalid. According to the statement from LASU, the surname “ABISOYE” was incorrectly printed instead of “ABIOYE.” Recognizing the error, the university invalidated the certificate on February 25, 2013, and subsequently issued a corrected version to the graduate on September 30, 2014.

Despite these corrections, the invalidated certificate should have been destroyed immediately to prevent any misuse. However, due to an oversight in the university’s office waste screening process prior to disposal, the invalid certificate was not shredded and somehow found its way into the public space, eventually ending up at a ‘suya’ spot—a popular local eatery.

Impact and University’s Response to Oversight

This incident has prompted LASU to reassess its document handling and disposal procedures to ensure such mistakes are not repeated. The university expressed regret over the oversight and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict control over academic documentation. Management has promised to implement stricter screening processes for office waste papers and other sensitive materials to safeguard against similar occurrences in the future.

LASU also used this opportunity to remind current students and alumni to verify the accuracy of their academic documents promptly upon receipt and to report any discrepancies to the university administration immediately. This proactive approach aims to prevent confusion and maintain the integrity of issued academic credentials.

Community and Academic Reaction

The discovery of the invalid certificate at a food stand not only raised questions about document security at LASU but also highlighted broader issues of document handling within educational institutions. Students and alumni expressed concerns over how such an oversight could happen, prompting discussions on academic integrity and administrative accountability in higher education.

As LASU moves forward, the university has engaged with student groups and faculty to outline new measures and to discuss the importance of vigilant administrative practices. This engagement is part of LASU’s broader initiative to enhance transparency and trust between the university administration and its community.
