Kidnappers Demand N20M for Retired School Principal

Published on

The Sunday morning routine of Akparawa Ezekiel Paul, a retired school principal, was violently interrupted when kidnappers stormed his residence in Ikot Abasi Akpan, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. As he prepared for Sunday Mass at St. Pius X Church Parish, a group of assailants seized him. The incident took place near the Community Civic Center, just moments after Mr. Paul stepped outside to perform domestic chores.

The Demand for a Hefty Ransom

Following the abduction, the criminals have demanded a ransom of N20 million for the safe release of Mr. Paul. This demand underscores a disturbing pattern of targeted kidnappings in the region, which often focus on vulnerable and unprotected individuals in their own homes. The urgency of the situation has gripped the local community, leaving many in a state of fear and apprehension about the increasing boldness of criminal gangs.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Akwa Ibom State Command, ASP Timfon John, confirmed the kidnapping and the ongoing efforts to rescue Mr. Paul. “The police are aware and strategic efforts are ongoing,” stated ASP John, emphasizing the commitment of the police to combating this resurgence of kidnappings in the area. The swift response from the local authorities highlights the seriousness with which this case is being handled, in the hope of deterring further criminal activities.

The neighborhood was quick to react on the day of the kidnapping, rallied by Mrs. Mary Ezekiel, Mr. Paul’s wife, who raised the alarm after witnessing the abduction. Despite the immediate community’s attempt to intervene, the abductors managed to escape with Mr. Paul, reportedly using motorcycles parked nearby to make a swift getaway.

Further developments include the arrest of several members of the gang believed to be responsible for the kidnapping. Among those detained is a suspect known as ‘Taller’, a notorious figure suspected of driving the motorcycle that carried away the retired principal. These arrests are part of a broader crackdown on criminal networks within the state.

Implications and Wider Concerns

This kidnapping incident has raised significant concerns about safety and security, particularly for the elderly and retired individuals in rural communities. The event has also sparked discussions about the need for enhanced security measures and more effective community policing to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the community and authorities continue to deal with the ramifications of this crime, the focus remains on securing the safe return of Mr. Paul and ensuring that justice is served for his family and the wider community affected by this and similar acts of violence.
