No Name Change for Murtala Muhammed Expressway in Abuja

Published on

The Nigerian government has stepped in to clear up confusion surrounding the name of a major highway in Abuja, the Murtala Muhammed Expressway. Rumors circulating online suggested the road had been renamed, but the government has confirmed this is not the case.

New Road Receives Wole Soyinka Honor, Murtala Muhammed Expressway Retains Name

The source of the confusion appears to be a recent event on June 4, 2024. During that time, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a new road within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This new road, known as Arterial Road N20, stretches from Katampe to Jahi and provides a vital connection between the Outer Northern Expressway (also known as the Murtala Muhammed Expressway) and the Northern Parkway (Ahmadu Bello Way).

At the inauguration ceremony, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike proposed naming the new road after Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka. President Tinubu reportedly agreed to this suggestion.

Government Clarifies: Arterial Road N20 Renamed, Not Murtala Muhammed Expressway

The Federal Government released a statement to officially address the rumors. The statement, signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, media aide to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, stressed that renaming the Murtala Muhammed Expressway was never a consideration.

“We urge all citizens to disregard any misinformation regarding renaming the Murtala Muhammed Expressway,” the statement said. “The report is entirely false and only exists in the imagination of its purveyors.”

This clarification confirms that the name change only applies to the newly inaugurated Arterial Road N20, which will now bear the name of Wole Soyinka. The Murtala Muhammed Expressway will retain its original designation, continuing to honor the legacy of former Head of State General Murtala Ramat Mohammed.

Respect for History

This highlights the importance of accurate information dissemination, especially in the digital age where rumors can spread quickly. The Nigerian government’s swift action in clarifying the situation helped to prevent confusion and ensure public trust.

Furthermore, the decision to retain the name of the Murtala Muhammed Expressway demonstrates respect for Nigerian history. General Murtala Muhammed was a significant figure in the country’s development, and his legacy continues to be recognized.

The inauguration of the new Arterial Road N20 represents a positive step forward for infrastructure development in Abuja. This new road aims to improve traffic flow and connectivity within the city.
