Police Summon NLC Leader Ajaero Over Alleged Terrorism, Treason Charges

Published on

The Nigerian Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning over several serious charges, including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. Ajaero has been asked to appear at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Abuja on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. If he fails to comply, the police have stated that they will issue a warrant for his arrest.

The letter of invitation, dated August 19, 2024, and signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner, outlines the reasons for the summons. It states that Ajaero’s name has come up in an ongoing investigation involving these serious crimes, and he is required to answer questions related to the case.

The letter’s tone is firm, indicating that failure to appear would result in further legal action, including the possibility of arrest. This move by the police has sparked reactions from various quarters, with many viewing it as an attempt to intimidate and silence those who oppose the government’s policies.

An official from the NLC expressed concern, saying that this action reveals the government’s authoritarian tendencies and its resolve to suppress any group or individual that challenges its policies. The official criticized the government for focusing on silencing dissenters instead of addressing the legitimate grievances raised by protesters, particularly those involved in the #Endbadgovernance movement.

The NLC has been vocal about the negative impact of the government’s policies on the Nigerian people, citing widespread hardship, suffering, and frustration. The official indicated that the NLC would comply with the police invitation but would do so with full media coverage to ensure transparency and accountability.

Benson Upah, the Head of Information and Public Affairs for the NLC, also reacted to the situation. He noted that the letter was delivered under unusual circumstances, as it was claimed that the Labour House was closed when the police attempted to deliver the invitation. However, Upah pointed out that staff were present at the office beyond 6 p.m. on the day in question, raising suspicions about the police’s actions.

Upah also expressed concern that the letter did not address Ajaero by his official title as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, which he found odd and disrespectful. This incident follows a previous raid on the NLC headquarters, which the Congress condemned, demanding an apology from both the police and the government.

The NLC has made it clear that it was not involved in organizing recent protests but has nonetheless been critical of the police’s handling of the demonstrations, particularly the high casualty rates. The organization has warned that if anything happens to its leadership or members, the police will be held responsible.

This situation has led many to wonder who might be trying to sideline Joe Ajaero and what the underlying motives might be. The tension between the NLC and the government appears to be escalating, with the NLC continuing to challenge what it sees as repressive actions against those who stand up against the government’s policies.
