Abuja Residents Alarmed by Ongoing Tremors in City

KEY POINTS

  • Abuja residents report ongoing tremors across several districts.
  • Mpape, Gwarinpa, and Katampe areas have experienced vibrations for five days.
  • The Nigeria Geological Survey Agency has urged residents to record occurrences.

Residents in Mpape, a district in Abuja, have been thrown into panic as suspected tremors and vibrations persist for five consecutive days, affecting parts of the Nigerian capital.

Dr. Ebenezer Adebisi, Chairman of the Mpape Hills Landlord Association, informed reporters on Tuesday that residents have been experiencing unusual vibrations since the weekend.

He noted that although tremors have occurred in the past due to rock blasting by quarry companies, the recent tremors are more intense and frequent.

Adebisi, a retired Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, emphasized the gravity of the situation. “The vibration is stronger than what we normally experience during rock blasting. We don’t know what’s causing it this time,” he said.

The tremors have also been reported in other areas, including Gwarinpa and Katampe, further heightening concerns.

Residents demand government intervention

Mpape residents have urged the Nigerian government and the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to address the situation urgently.

According to a report by Vanguard, Adebisi added, “We need the government to take immediate action. People are worried, and it’s important we are informed about what to do next.”

Mrs. Florence Ilesanmi, a resident of Gwari Village, and Madam Aisha Lawal, who lives near Crushrock, shared similar experiences. Lawal noted that the interval between the vibrations is worrisome, and the inconsistency has residents on edge.

An official from the NGSA, speaking anonymously, advised residents to consider temporarily relocating if the tremors persist.

The official mentioned that while the agency has its monitoring equipment in place, residents should continue recording the vibrations’ frequency. “If the vibrations become heavier, it might be best to evacuate for safety,” the official added.

Concerns about seismic activity

Though no official cause has been determined, the tremors have sparked fears of potential seismic activity. An NGSA representative told residents to record each occurrence and urged them to remain vigilant. “Our equipment is monitoring the situation, and we are prepared for any emergency,” the official stated.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the tremors, but the persistent vibrations have left many residents anxious about the potential risks.

Residents are now urging the government to act swiftly, not only to determine the cause of the tremors but also to provide clear guidance on safety precautions. Adebisi stressed, “We need answers and a plan. The uncertainty is what’s causing the most panic.”
