  • Government aims to attract private investments without straining public resources.

The Federal Government has set up task forces within the Ministry of Aviation and the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) to accelerate Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the aviation sector.

This initiative aims to unlock economic potential through increased private investment in infrastructure.

Collaboration to Drive Aviation Investments

The decision to establish task forces was made during a meeting between the Director-General of the ICRC, Dr. Jobson Oseodion Ewalefoh, and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo SAN.

Dr. Ewalefoh emphasized the importance of aviation in boosting other sectors and fostering national economic growth. He highlighted that the ICRC’s task force would streamline the investment process to fast-track PPP projects in the aviation industry.

Minister Keyamo also announced the creation of a similar task force within the Ministry of Aviation. This group will work alongside the ICRC to ensure the swift and efficient delivery of PPP infrastructure projects.

Importance of PPPs in Closing Infrastructure Gaps

Dr. Ewalefoh noted that global infrastructure challenges require innovative funding solutions, such as PPPs.

He cited international examples like Heathrow Airport in the UK, which attracted £16 billion in private sector funds between 2003 and 2019, and Dakar Airport, which secured $575 million in investments.

With Nigeria’s population of over 200 million, Dr. Ewalefoh stressed the country’s potential to attract similar investments in the aviation sector without overburdening public resources.

According to Vanguard, he also praised the Minister’s efforts in resolving long-standing issues, including the signing of the Cape Town Convention Practice Direction and restoring Emirates Airlines’ operations in Nigeria.

Task Forces to Accelerate Project Timelines

Minister Keyamo reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing PPP projects in aviation.

He assured the ICRC of the Ministry’s support in ensuring timely delivery of key projects such as cargo terminals and other infrastructure developments.

Keyamo highlighted the urgency of addressing the country’s significant infrastructure gap, emphasizing the need to work quickly and efficiently.

“We will set timelines for ourselves and bring all PPP proposals to the table to ensure rapid progress,” he said.
