KEY POINTS

  • House of Representatives calls for a review of Nigeria’s tax policies.
  • Emphasis on streamlining taxes and reducing burdens on low-income citizens.
  • Government urged to explore alternative revenue sources and increase tax enforcement.

The Federal Government and pertinent authorities have been requested by the House of Representatives to evaluate the current tax structure in order to alleviate the financial burden on Nigerians.

This includes avoiding multiple and needless taxes, especially on necessities. The parliamentarians emphasized that as the economy deteriorates, the government must become more attentive to the suffering of the people.

Call for streamlined tax policies and alternative revenue sources

Within three weeks, the House’s Committees on Finance and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) were required to undertake a thorough examination of the current tax legislation and collection procedures.

Simplifying and getting rid of unnecessary or overlapping taxes that add to the financial burden on citizens is the goal. Finding and fixing instances of double taxation at all governmental levels is the aim, all the while making sure that government income targets are fulfilled.

Additionally, the House suggested that the federal government look into different ways to generate revenue. These include addressing financial leaks in the system, strengthening the enforcement of current tax laws, and expanding the tax net to encompass more high-income people.

In order to raise government revenue, the motion promotes more exports of cash crops and agricultural goods.

Economic Challenges and the Need for Sensitivity

A motion titled “Need for Government Sensitivity to the Plight of the Masses and the Call to Refrain from Shifting Economic Burden through Unnecessary and Multiple Taxation” was adopted before the call for action was issued.

According to Vanguard , during the House’s plenary session in Abuja, Hon. Peter Aniekwe introduced it, and three other MPs, including the Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, backed it.

Aniekwe underlined that the typical citizen’s quality of life has deteriorated due to Nigeria’s current economic circumstances, which are characterized by increased unemployment, inflation, and the cost of living.

He pointed out that low-income individuals, many of whom already struggle to pay for essentials like food, healthcare, and education, are further burdened financially by the numerous taxes, levies, and charges imposed at several levels of government.

The member reaffirmed that the government’s main duty is to ease the financial hardships that its people endure by enacting laws that support social welfare, economic growth, and universal prosperity.

Public Education and Legislative Oversight

The House also urged the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and other pertinent organizations to start a public awareness campaign in their resolutions.

The goal of this campaign is to inform Nigerians of their tax rights and obligations while encouraging them to report instances of unfair taxation or exploitation.

Additionally, the House ordered that any new tax measures that disproportionately hit low-income groups be immediately suspended until their effects are thoroughly examined.

The Committee on Legislative Compliance has also been assigned the responsibility of supervising the execution of these decisions.
