KEY POINTS

  • Ogun State temporarily halted CNG bus operations for supply chain assessments.
  • New CNG regulations prompted service disruptions.
  • Government committed to sustainable and green transport solutions.

The Ogun State Government has announced that operations of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered buses in Abeokuta will resume shortly, following a temporary service disruption. The pause in operations, which lasted 24 hours, was attributed to essential assessments of the gas supply chain to ensure operational integrity and safety.

In a statement issued Wednesday in Abeokuta, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Olugbenga Dairo assured the public that the government is committed to restoring the service quickly. He noted that the disruption was also influenced by the ongoing implementation of new regulations governing the commercial and industrial supply of CNG to refill companies.

Prioritizing safety and compliance

The government emphasized the importance of a stable and secure gas supply chain, underscoring its role in sustaining the operations of CNG-powered transportation. According to Dairo, the assessments aim to mitigate risks, improve safety standards, and align operations with the updated CNG regulatory framework.

“Critical evaluations of the supply chain and compliance with emerging CNG regulations are necessary steps to maintain the efficiency and safety of this environmentally friendly initiative,” Dairo stated.

The Commissioner also expressed appreciation to the public for their patience during the disruption, noting that these measures reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring a reliable and sustainable transportation system for residents of Abeokuta and beyond.

Commitment to green transportation

The adoption of CNG-powered buses is a key component of Ogun State’s green energy initiative, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and lowering transportation costs for residents. The program, launched earlier this year, has been well-received for its eco-friendly approach and cost-efficiency.

The government reiterated its resolve to scale up the CNG-powered transportation system as part of broader efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources and improve urban mobility in the state.

Ogun advances sustainable transit with CNG buses

The temporary suspension has provided an opportunity to strengthen the operational framework for CNG-powered buses, ensuring the system’s long-term viability. The government remains optimistic about resuming full operations soon and has pledged to keep the public informed about progress.

With the recommencement of the CNG bus services, Ogun State aims to reinforce its position as a leader in sustainable transportation in Nigeria. “Our commitment to green energy and efficient public transit remains unwavering,” Dairo concluded.

The recommencement of CNG-powered bus services is expected to bring relief to commuters, reaffirming the government’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence.
