UK Launches Africa’s Largest Visa Application Centre in Lagos

United Kingdom has inaugurated Africa’s largest Visa Application Centre in Ikeja, Lagos, operated by VFS Global. The new facility is part of the UK’s strategy to improve access to visa services for Nigerian travelers, reinforcing its commitment to bilateral relations.

Expanding access and enhancing services

Announced by the British High Commission in Lagos, the Ikeja facility complements existing VACs in Abuja and Victoria Island. Operational since November 19, the centre is designed to simplify and enhance the application process, providing a seamless experience for users.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter highlighted the significance of this development for UK-Nigeria relations. “I am delighted to witness the launch of Africa’s largest visa application centre here in Lagos.

According to Punch,  “Nigeria remains a vital partner for the UK and we are committed to continuously improving services for Nigerian visa applicants,” Baxter said.

Marc Owen, Director of Visa, Status and Information Services at UK Visas and Immigration, described the facility as a “milestone in delivering world-class visa services.” He noted that over 225,000 visa applications from Nigerians were processed in the year to June 2024, reflecting the growing demand for travel to the UK. “The opening of this new centre in Ikeja underscores our dedication to providing accessible, efficient, and applicant-focused services,” Owen remarked.

Tailored services for Nigerian travelers

The Ikeja VAC offers a suite of improved features, including document upload support, extended submission hours, SMS application updates, courier-based passport return options, and the ability to retain passports during biometric enrolment. These enhancements aim to provide greater convenience without altering processing times or outcomes.

Residents of Abuja can also take advantage of a Mobile Visa Service for submissions, while applicants seeking a more personalized experience can utilize the Premium Lounge, which offers dedicated staff and exclusive services.

Meeting Rising Demand

The UK’s appeal to Nigerian travellers is evident in the country’s share of global visit visa applications, accounting for 5 percent of the total. The Ikeja centre is a key step in addressing this demand while ensuring efficient and accessible visa services.
