KEY POINTS

  • TCN’s upgrades double substation capacities in Lagos’ key areas.
  • Projects are part of a $200 million World Bank-backed initiative.
  • Improved power supply benefits Lagos, Ogun, and other regions nationwide.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has made significant strides in strengthening Lagos’ electricity infrastructure.

On Wednesday, TCN announced the commissioning of new transformers in strategic substations across Alausa, Ota, and Alagbon.

These developments are part of a $200 million World Bank-supported initiative to stabilize the national grid and enhance electricity distribution.

During a press tour of Lagos Region substations, TCN Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz highlighted the transformative impact of these projects.

He noted the installation of a 125MVA transformer at the Alausa 132/33KV substation, doubling its capacity from 105MVA to 230MVA.

According to Punch, the upgrade will allow Ikeja Electric to better serve areas such as Ikeja, Oregun, Ojodu, and Alausa.

“The government is deeply committed to improving electricity nationwide. However, reaching the 10,000MW target by 2025 will require substantial investments,” Abdulaziz remarked, emphasizing the need for financial backing to mirror the scale of India’s $500 million annual power development budget.

Transformer upgrades improve electricity distribution in Lagos

The upgrades didn’t stop at Alausa. Earlier in 2024, the 132/33KV Ota substation received a 100/125MVA transformer, increasing its capacity from 160MVA to 260MVA.

According to Abdulaziz, this project has significantly improved electricity supply for IBEDC and IKEDC customers in areas like Ota, Iju, Sango, Ijoko, and Atan.

At the 330/132/33KV Alagbon substation, two 100/125MVA transformers were commissioned in January, expanding its capacity from 240MVA to an impressive 440MVA.

This upgrade enables Eko Distribution Company to deliver more reliable power to critical Lagos neighborhoods, including Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Banana Island, Lagos Island, and Lekki.

“These projects demonstrate TCN’s commitment to addressing electricity distribution challenges, particularly in Lagos and Ogun States. The enhancements provide improved power reliability for residential, commercial, and industrial users,” Abdulaziz explained.

Nationwide power development and future energy goals

TCN’s upgrades are not confined to Lagos and Ogun States. Abdulaziz noted that similar projects are underway in regions such as Kano, Maiduguri, and Yola.

He reiterated that electricity is essential for national development and affirmed the government’s resolve to tackle the power sector’s long-standing issues.

“These developments mark a significant step toward achieving Nigeria’s energy goals,” Abdulaziz said.

“Lagos and Ogun States are now better positioned to experience improved powe supply, benefiting millions of residents and businesses.”

The TCN’s commitment to addressing grid inefficiencies reflects a larger vision for nationwide energy transformation.

With continuous investments in critical infrastructure, the organization is paving the way for a more reliable and efficient power supply across Nigeria.
