Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing pioneer members to the South East Development Commission (SEDC) board.

Kalu noted that the appointments underscored the administration’s vision for equitable regional development.

Likewise, the appointment is key to addressing the critical infrastructure, ecological and environmental challenges that are inherent in the South East.

Notable appointees announced

The SEDC board appointments include Emeka Wogu, former Minister of Labour and Productivity, as Chairman, Stanley Ohajuruka, Executive Director for Finance, Toby Okechukwu, Executive Director for Projects and Clifford Ogbede, as a director.

Kalu also recognized the appointment of Chijioke Chukwu, former Minority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly, to the North West Development Commission (NWDC) board.

Call for action

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu urged the new board members to work diligently towards achieving the SEDC’s mandate.

He stressed the importance of their contributions to driving development and meeting the needs of the South East.

“President Tinubu’s decision reflects a strategic commitment to reposition the South East for sustainable development and national progress,” Kalu said.

The SEDC was established to tackle persistent issues in the region, including infrastructure deficits and environmental degradation.

Kalu, a key advocate for the commission’s creation, sponsored the legislation to address these challenges comprehensively.

As the SEDC begins operations, expectations are high for the board to implement impactful initiatives that will advance regional development while fostering economic resilience across Nigeria.
