NSIB Opens Inquiry into Abuja Cargo Plane Runway Incident

Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into a runway excursion involving a Boeing 737-400 cargo plane, registered 5N-JRT and operated by Allied Air.

The incident took place at approximately 10:06 a.m. local time on December 11, 2024, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The aircraft, en route from Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos as flight AJK206, veered off the right side of Runway 22 after landing, skidding into a grass verge.

Emergency teams respond to aircraft damage

Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries reported among the crew or ground personnel. However, the plane sustained significant damage. 

The Nation reported that, Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to secure the site and ensure the safety of all personnel,” according to a statement from Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB.

The NSIB has initiated a formal investigation to assess the causes and contributing factors behind the incident. “Our Go Team has been dispatched to the site for an on-site assessment, data recovery, and interviews with those involved,” the statement noted. Further updates will be issued as more information becomes available.
