KEY POINTS

  • The EFCC seeks N808.6million for purchases of fuel for vehicles, and DSS N1.3billion.
  • $1.1billion for cybersecurity tools and counter terrorism equipment is what DSS allocated.
  • Earmarked for defence aircraft maintenance, security upgrades at N960billion.

According to proposed appropriation bill, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) will, in 2025, spend N2billion fuelling their operational vehicles.

This expenditure is part of the N47.90trillion “Budget of Restoration: Presented to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu on December 18, this session is titled ‘Securing Peace and Rebuilding Prosperity.’

An analysis of the budget indicates that the administration has committed no mean amount, N4.91trillion, to securing the country through defence and security.

Apart from this, the EFCC budgeted N808.7million for fuelling vehicles while also earmarking N462million for refreshments and meals.

On the other hand, the DSS allocated the sum of N1.37billion for vehicle fueling and N1.4million for tactical counter terrorism equipment.

Also, the administration proposed N1.4billion for the procurement of arms and ammunition and N1.1billion for advanced cybersecurity tools to bolster intelligence and counter terrorism operations.

Defence spending

Agencies under the Office of the National Security Adviser, including DSS, have budgeted a total of N960billion for maintenance of defence aircraft and procurement of security equipment for a number of sectors. They fit the national objectives of stability and capable crisis response.

The allocation is still being examined by critics and analysts, who argue that some of the allocation for the country’s security challenges does not sufficiently match tangible outcomes for operational costs.
