The military forces of Benin dealt with 17 attackers in an operation that happened during the weekend after six soldiers died in the northern Karimama town.
Security conditions have worsened in Benin’s northern areas
The incident took place within the National Park which spans through Niger and Burkina Faso where jihadist insurgencies have made these territories their base. Military forces in Benin are actively searching this targeted area after the attack according to information provided by an official to AFP.
The northern part of Benin recently ascended on terrorism metrics as provincial authorities detected strikes from Al-Qaeda-linked groups and Islamic State entities that dwell across its frontiers. According to a diplomatic source more than 121 Beninese soldiers lost their lives in conflicts since 2021.
Security forces intensify border patrol operations
Twenty-eight Beninese soldiers died in a strike against Pendjari National Park before the attack was declared by members of the Al-Qaeda-linked Group to Support Islam and Muslims (JNIM).
Gunmen conducted two attacks on Beninese military targets which resulted in the death of three soldiers and injuries to four more soldiers at the pipeline facility in December.
The government of Benin has launched Operation Mirador with 3,000 troops along with additional recruitment of 5,000 personnel to enhance national security measures.
The defense ministry expanded military psychological support mechanisms and stressed the importance of developing military personnel psychological and physical strength to handle escalating security dangers.
