  • Makinde believes in his ability to be Nigeria’s president in 2027.

  • He prioritises rebuilding his party, the PDP, before any presidential run.

  • Makinde remains committed to purposeful governance and rejects populist politics.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed confidence in his ability to lead Nigeria as president in 2027.

He made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday. He emphasised that his achievements as governor have proven his capacity for the nation’s highest office.

Makinde discusses priorities for leadership and PDP’s future

Makinde, however, acknowledged that while he believes in his abilities, he is unsure whether it aligns with the people’s will. He raised questions about whether his presidential ambitions would be supported by the people and his party.

Despite his belief in his potential, he remains focused on rebuilding the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as a priority.

He stated, “We must fix our party. You must have a platform for you to even aspire to be anything.” Makinde emphasised the importance of stabilising the party and preparing it for the future.

Makinde rejects populist politics, focuses on purposeful governance

According to Punch, Makinde reaffirmed his commitment to purposeful governance, rejecting populist politics. He vowed not to be distracted by political stunts, focusing on delivering for the people. “I’m not distracted, and I will not play stunt politics,” he said.

Makinde also stated that any future political move would be thoroughly prepared and accountable.

Reflecting on his political journey, he expressed contentment with what he had achieved, saying, “If my political journey ends right here, I am also very happy.”
