Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori Defects from PDP to APC

KEY POINTS

  • Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has defected from the PDP to the APC, marking a significant shift in the state’s political dynamics.

  • Analysts suggest the move could weaken the PDP’s stronghold in Delta State while bolstering the APC’s influence ahead of the 2027 elections.

  • The PDP faces internal challenges following the defection, with potential ripple effects on Nigeria’s broader political landscape.

In a stunning political realignment, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement, made late Wednesday evening after a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba, has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Governor Oborevwori, who secured victory in the 2023 gubernatorial election under the PDP banner, was reportedly welcomed with open arms by top APC officials, including national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje.

“This is a new chapter for Delta State and the APC,” Ganduje stated during a brief press conference. Analysts suggest the defection is a calculated move to consolidate the APC’s influence in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Why did Oborevwori jump ship?

While the governor has yet to publicly disclose his reasons for defecting, insiders cite internal PDP divisions and promises of federal support as key factors. A source close to the governor, speaking anonymously, revealed, “There were unresolved grievances within the PDP, and the APC offered a more stable platform for governance and re-election prospects.”

The PDP has expressed dismay over the defection, with party spokesman Debo Ologunagba calling it “a betrayal of the mandate given to him by Delta voters.” Meanwhile, political analysts warn that Oborevwori’s move could trigger further defections, weakening the PDP’s stronghold in the Niger Delta.

The APC, however, is celebrating the addition of a high-profile governor to its ranks. “Governor Oborevwori’s decision reflects the growing confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership,” said APC spokesperson Felix Morka. The ruling party now controls 22 out of Nigeria’s 36 states, bolstering its dominance ahead of the next electoral cycle.

AAN TV reports that the defection raises critical questions about governance in Delta State, where Oborevwori’s policies may now align more closely with the APC’s national agenda.

Critics fear this could lead to shifts in state projects and resource allocation, while supporters argue it may bring faster federal collaboration.

Opposition leaders, including Labour Party’s Julius Abure, have condemned the move as “opportunistic,” warning of instability. Meanwhile, civil society groups urge transparency, demanding the governor address citizens directly on his plans.

As reactions pour in, one thing is clear: Nigeria’s political chessboard has been rearranged, with Delta State at the center of a high-stakes power play.
