Activists Warn Nigeria Against Drifting Toward One-Party State

Key Points

  • Nigerian activists warn against the growing one-party state trend.

  • Politicians are defecting to the ruling party due to coercion.

  • A healthy democracy relies on competition and multiple political voices.

Nigerian activists and academics raised alarms over the country’s political direction. In a statement, 18 concerned individuals warned that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is undermining Nigeria’s democracy.
The group emphasized that efforts are underway to reduce the country to a one-party state.

The threat of a one-party state

The activists argued that the continuous defection of political leaders to the ruling party threatens Nigeria’s democratic foundations.

They claim political figures are moving to the All Progressives Congress (APC) out of fear or coercion, not out of genuine political alignment.

The activists expressed concern about the use of state institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to force defections. This, they believe, erodes public trust and undermines democracy.

They warned that a country without opposition parties is not a true democracy. Political competition provides citizens with choices, fosters accountability, and stimulates public debate.

The group urged Nigerians to protect the integrity of the political system and prevent it from becoming a tool of one-party dominance.

Calls for action and solidarity

The activists highlighted the importance of a vibrant opposition to ensure the health of Nigeria’s democracy. They also called on the government to respect the multiparty system and end the persecution of opposition leaders. The group further emphasized that Nigeria cannot afford to return to the days of military rule and dictatorship.

“Democracy thrives when many voices are heard, not just one,” they stated. The activists stressed the need for unity among civil society, the media, and international partners to preserve Nigeria’s democratic values.
