PDP aims to reclaim its mandate through legal proceedings.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken decisive legal steps against Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in Delta State.
This action follows their recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The party’s Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, received instructions to prepare the necessary legal documents to challenge the defection and reclaim the party’s mandate.
Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, announced this decision after the first meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) for the year.
He emphasized the party’s commitment to legally contesting the defection, asserting that the officials were initially elected under the PDP platform.
In addition to the legal action, the PDP appointed Emma Ogidi, the Caretaker Chairman for the South-South zone, to assume control of the Delta State PDP leadership structure.
Ogidi’s responsibilities include identifying new party leaders, effectively disregarding the existing leadership under Chief Dan Orbih.
Oborevwori and Okowa’s Defection Triggers Political Shift in Delta
On April 23, 2025, a significant political shift occurred in Delta State. Governor Oborevwori, former Governor Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in the state defected to the APC.
This move was announced following a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba, the state capital.
The defection included Delta’s Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, state commissioners, local government chairmen, and the state’s grassroots machinery.
This mass movement to the APC is viewed as a strategic realignment with potential implications for the 2027 general elections.
Senator James Manager, who announced the defection, stated that the decision resulted from extensive consultations with political stakeholders.
He emphasized that the entire PDP structure in the state has been integrated into the APC.
PDP Strives to Reclaim Mandate Through Legal Channels
The PDP’s decision to pursue legal action underscores its determination to reclaim its mandate in Delta State.
The party views the defection as a breach of trust by officials who were elected under its platform.
The upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for May 27, will further discuss these developments and strategize on the party’s next steps.
Through these actions, the PDP aims to address the broader implications of political defections and reinforce the importance of party loyalty in Nigeria’s political landscape.
