Delta Governor’s APC Defection Hint Sparks Speculation Over Ibori’s Political Future

KEY POINTS

  • Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori hinted at ex-Governor James Ibori’s potential APC defection during a memorial service, amplifying political realignment rumors in the PDP’s former stronghold.

  • The APC’s recruitment of high-profile PDP defectors like Oborevwori and Okowa signals a strategic push to dominate the Niger Delta ahead of the 2027 elections.

  • The vigil for late Deputy Governor Amos Utuama highlighted Urhobo leaders’ emphasis on unity, while underscoring the blurred lines between Delta’s political and spiritual spheres.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has ignited political speculation after suggesting that former Governor James Ibori, a stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The remarks came during a vigil mass honoring the late Deputy Governor Amos Utuama in Otu-Jeremi, Ughelli South, as Oborevwori urged unity among Urhobo leaders amid shifting allegiances in the state’s volatile political landscape.

Oborevwori, who recently defected to the APC alongside former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, framed his comments against a backdrop of deepening fractures within the PDP. “Solidarity among Urhobo leaders is critical for Delta’s progress,” he stated, paying tribute to Utuama’s legacy. “Prof. Utuama’s selflessness—like donating his Asaba land to the Catholic Church—exemplifies leadership beyond politics.” His allusion to Ibori’s potential defection follows weeks of rumors about the ex-governor’s dissatisfaction with the PDP’s national leadership.

PDP’s delta stronghold erodes as APC courts key figures ahead of 2027 elections

Political analysts view Oborevwori’s remarks as a strategic maneuver to weaken the PDP’s influence in the Niger Delta, a region traditionally dominated by the party. Ibori, who governed Delta from 1999 to 2007, remains a kingmaker despite his 2017 conviction in the UK for money laundering.

Channelstv reports that his defection would deliver a seismic blow to the PDP, which has already lost prominent figures like Okowa and Oborevwori to the APC.

The APC’s aggressive recruitment in Delta aligns with its broader strategy to consolidate power in southern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 polls. A party insider, speaking anonymously, revealed: “Ibori’s network and Urhobo voter base are irreplaceable. We’re prepared to offer concessions to secure his crossover.” Meanwhile, PDP leaders downplayed the threat, with National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba insisting, “Our grassroots structures remain intact.”

At the vigil, Bishop Anthony Ewherido of Warri Diocese underscored the intersection of faith and governance, urging leaders to prioritize humility and public service. “Prof. Utuama’s life reminds us that legacy transcends political office,” he said, while family spokesperson Ovie Utuama thanked attendees for their solidarity.

The event, however, doubled as a political rally, with APC supporters openly lobbying Ibori. Sources close to the ex-governor say he is weighing options amid pressure from allies. “The PDP’s failure to address internal grievances leaves many questioning its viability,” said political analyst Efe Johnson.
