FCT Emergency Services on High Alert as Thunderstorms Loom

KEY POINTS

  • FEMD activates its emergency teams through their response to NiMET’s storm warning system.
  • Thunderstorms will affect FCT and Benue as well as Nasarawa, Plateau and southeastern states.
  • The local population needs to refrain from storm-related driving and tree contact and disconnect all electrical equipment.

FEMD search and rescue teams stand ready in an emergency posture because thunderstorms will strike several states surrounding Abuja.

An early weather warning from Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) prompted FEMD through its Head of Public Affairs to deploy search and rescue teams in response to potential storm and wind hazards in the region until May 3.

Mr Abdulrahman Mohammed declared that the activation of emergency teams serves as a planned contingency to protect inhabitants and their belongings in dangerous meteorological conditions.

NiMET alert on thunderstorms Loom and the states to involved

A NiMET alert reported Benue, Plateau and Nasarawa state as active storm areas while predicting these storms would affect the Federal Capital Territory and southeastern states Edo, Imo, Abia and Anambra. The warning predicts that powerful wind speeds will appear before the storm develops because they endanger vehicles and structures as well as outdoor installations.

The Abuja population should exercise caution by staying out of heavy rainfall and tree zones and by not driving during storms since it diminishes their chances of branch-related injuries.

Power outages should occur when rain starts because such conditions create a risk of electrocution and dangerous power surges.

FEMD maintained its dedication to protecting both lives and property as thunderstorms loom by requesting emergency reports through the toll-free 112 number.
