Community mourns five children after suspected food poisoning in Anambra

The Aghalu family was saddened by the unexpected deaths, which also sent the peaceful Idemili North Local Government Area into shock and grief.

During a visit by our correspondent on Wednesday, neighbors and family members comforted the bereaved family, providing both material and emotional support where it was feasible.

The father of the departed children, Pa Robinson Aghalu, 79, a retired soldier, explained the series of events that culminated in the catastrophe.

He claimed that soon after consuming a dinner their mother had made that included yam and a local soup, the kids started to feel ill.

Their father sent the kids to local hospitals after they complained of severe stomachaches, frequent vomiting, and lightheadedness.

Five of the six children passed away in spite of the efforts of medical personnel at Crown Hospital, Iyienu Mission Hospital, and a maternity clinic.

According to reports, the sixth youngster, who also ate the meal, responded well to therapy and is still being watched by medical staff.

According to Aghalu, his wife became very unwell after consuming the same dinner and is still in critical condition in the hospital, hardly able to speak.

Because he was staying with a relative for study and academic help, the family’s lone surviving child, a teenager, managed to avoid the incident.

The family is unable to pay the growing hospital bills and burial-related costs, according to community leaders and well-wishers who have called for immediate assistance.

Police begin full investigation into suspected food poisoning in Anambra

Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesman for the Anambra State police, confirmed the occurrence, saying that officers came to the house and collected food samples for forensic analysis.

According to Punch, Ikenga went on to say that after securing the crime scene, the police started speaking with nearby residents to obtain information about the incident and evidence.

He attested to the recovery of the children’s remains and their placement at a nearby morgue pending the outcome of the autopsy.

Ikenga stated that public safety is still the case’s top priority and that the command will keep the public informed of any new developments as the investigations continue.

While police wait for lab findings to determine whether the dinner was poisoned or if there are other possible causes, the neighborhood is still in mourning.
