Peter Obi: Nigeria a Difficult Country for Good People to Govern

KEY POINTS

  • Peter Obi believes it is hard to govern Nigeria with honesty because of the opposition from the system.
  • He spoke and appreciates Governor Alex Otti for leading Abia State so well.
  • Otti and religious heads stressed following divine advice and looking ahead for the future.

According to Peter Obi, who ran for president on the Labour Party ticket, Nigeria is not an easy place for honest leaders because of established problems and people’s reluctance to hold others accountable.

Obi spoke during a thanksgiving service at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Aguiyi Ironsi Layout, Umuahia, for Governor Alex Otti’s two-year anniversary.

Running Nigeria honestly is very difficult

“It is challenging to lead Nigeria when you fully aim to do what is right,” Obi explained. He continuously put importance on prayer and seeking support from God in government matters.

Considering we represent the public, we are not really owners of those resources, just trustees. Resources from the government should be used to benefit the population.”

Obi called on the people to keep aiding Governor Otti and those who serve the people’s interests instead of their own.

He said that, despite their brief time in office, Otti’s team had clearly shown progress which was unusual.

He explained that he wants to transform the country, not competition for power with opposing groups. I am not rushing to be President. I really want to see Nigeria succeed,” he added. He tried to inspire others to conduct leadership according to Otti’s model.

Governor Otti believes success is due to God, acknowledging Peter Obi’s advices

When asked, Governor Alex Otti said that the administration’s achievements were thanks to divine favor. He said, “We’ve put effort into it, but God brought the growth,” quoting 1 Corinthians 3:6-7.

Otti gave thanks to his team and to lawmakers and judges for being part of what he called “the new Abia project.”

The governor said he appreciates Obi for always giving him helpful advice and for being a fine example of leadership.

Pastor encourages the Nigerians to think long term just as Peter Obi did earlier

Pastor Uguru encouraged leaders to be careful not to stop reaching for the future because of their recent achievements. He deemed Governor Otti’s victory an act of God and admired his leadership success, saying “You are doing a great job, Governor,” I have something that is straightforward evidence.”

Several political officials, church leaders, government workers and members of the community joined the thanksgiving service in Abia State.
