The remains of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari have arrived in the country following his death in a private London clinic at the age of 82.

Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2025, was flown back to Nigeria aboard a presidential aircraft. A high-level delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila received the late president’s body at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Security was tight around the airport as military honor guards carried the casket draped in Nigeria’s national colors.

Government officials, dignitaries, and family members gathered in solemn reflection, paying their respects to the man who served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

His remains were immediately taken to Daura, Katsina State, where final burial arrangements are expected to take place according to Islamic rites.

Flags have been flying at half-mast since Sunday in line with the national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and around the world, honoring Buhari’s contributions to national development and stability.
