  • Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda sustained minor injuries in a road accident along the Daura-Katsina Road while on official duty.

  • His media team confirmed he is stable and under observation, with no serious health concerns.

  • The incident has renewed public concern over northern road safety and calls for improved infrastructure.

Katsina State Governor, Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda, was involved in a road accident on Sunday, July 20, 2025, while traveling along the busy Daura-Katsina Road on official duty.

The incident, which caused minor injuries to the governor, triggered widespread concern among residents and political stakeholders in the state.

According to reports from his media office, the accident occurred in the early hours of the day as the governor’s convoy was making its way back to the state capital after a visit to Daura. Though the specific cause of the crash has not been confirmed, sources suggest that wet road conditions and mechanical issues may have contributed to the incident.

“Governor Radda is in stable condition and sustained only minor injuries. There is no cause for alarm,” his media aide assured in a statement issued shortly after the incident. “He is being monitored by medical professionals and is expected to resume work shortly.”

The governor, a former Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), was elected in 2023 and has been widely credited with prioritizing security and rural infrastructure development in Katsina State.

Governor Radda’s accident raises concerns about road safety along major northern highways

Security personnel, emergency responders, and medical aides on the governor’s team acted swiftly following the accident, ensuring the governor was transported to a secure location for urgent medical evaluation. No casualties were reported, though one of the accompanying vehicles in the convoy reportedly sustained significant damage.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to local reporters said the governor’s convoy had been moving at a moderate speed when the vehicle skidded off the wet pavement. A resident of the nearby town of Mashi described the moment as “sudden and shocking,” adding that “within moments, dozens of security officers cordoned off the area.”

The incident has once again drawn attention to the deteriorating state of some northern roads, including the Daura-Katsina axis. Several communities have, over the years, complained about poor drainage, potholes, and lack of regular maintenance on the highway, especially during the rainy season.

As reactions continue to pour in, top government officials, traditional rulers, and citizens have sent goodwill messages to the governor, praying for his speedy recovery. Among those who visited the governor was the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, who expressed gratitude for Radda’s survival.

“We are thankful to God that His Excellency survived the crash. The people of Katsina still need him, especially in this time of great transformation,” the monarch reportedly said.

It was not the first time a Nigerian governor has been involved in a road mishap while on duty. In 2020, former Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi survived a similar accident on the Abakaliki-Enugu expressway. These recurring events have led to calls for safer travel protocols and more investments in road infrastructure.

As of Monday morning, Governor Radda remains under medical observation but is reportedly up and interacting with close aides. His spokesperson reiterated that “there is no disruption to state governance, and the governor will soon address the public.”
