KEY POINTS

  • Nigeria extended their AfroBasket title streak to five.
  • D’Tigress are unbeaten in 29 AfroBasket matches.
  • Their AfroBasket title dominance spans from 2017 to 2025.

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have made history once again. With grit, strategy, and the composure of serial winners, they outlasted Mali 78–64 in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket final to claim their fifth straight AfroBasket title.

No other African team has achieved such dominance, and D’Tigress now stand alone at the summit of the sport on the continent.

Dominance redefined with focus keyphrase

The win marked their 29th straight victory in the AfroBasket tournament, a streak that began after their last loss in 2015 when they finished third in Yaoundé. According to BusinessDay, from 2017 through 2025, Nigeria swept five editions in a row, becoming the gold standard of consistency in African basketball.

The game, played with high intensity, tested the reigning champions like few others. Mali came out swinging, matching Nigeria basket for basket and forcing a 41–41 tie at halftime. The pressure was palpable, and for a moment, the streak appeared threatened.

Big plays and big hearts seal the legacy

But in the second half, D’Tigress showed why they wear the crown. Under the steady leadership of coach Rena Wakama, Nigeria’s defence locked in, and their bench stepped up. They pulled away in the third and fourth quarters, showing maturity and experience in the most crucial moments.

The Nigerian squad has proved once again that winning is not just about talent, it’s about staying power. The 29-0 record over the last decade, capped with a historic AfroBasket title, is a legacy few can challenge, and for now, no African team comes close.
