KEY POINTS

  • KWAM 1 under probe for airport incident.
  • NCAA files complaint over flight disruption.
  • Six-month no-fly ban issued pending outcome.

Nigeria’s police chief has ordered a full investigation into Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM 1, over claims he disrupted a flight at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun acted after the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority lodged a formal complaint, citing breaches of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations during the August 5 incident.

KWAM 1 airport incident sparks probe

According to police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, KWAM 1 allegedly engaged in unruly behaviour that obstructed the safe operation of a ValueJet flight to Lagos. The altercation reportedly began when airline staff flagged a flask he was carrying, suspecting it contained alcohol banned on domestic flights.

No-fly ban and crew licence suspension

The disagreement escalated to the point where the aircraft could not taxi. The NCAA responded by suspending the licences of the flight’s captain, Oluranti Ogoyi, and first officer, Ivan Iloba, while placing the singer on a six-month no-fly list pending the probe’s conclusion.

Wider concerns over aviation conduct

Although KWAM 1 later apologised, the case has intensified public calls for stricter enforcement of aviation rules. It follows another high-profile incident in which Ibom Air passenger Comfort Emmanson was remanded in custody for allegedly assaulting airline crew on a Uyo–Lagos flight.
