Key Points

  • NDLEA successfully busts international drug cartel with expansive global connections.

  • The cartel trafficked cocaine and meth across Brazil, UK, Australia.

  • Agency strongly warns traffickers of tougher, coordinated international enforcement actions.

Nigeria’s anti-drug agency has dealt a major blow to a powerful international group that is said to be moving drugs across three continents. After weeks of watching and raiding, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said its agents broke up a cartel with strong ties to the UK, Brazil, and Australia.

Officials said the bust was one of the biggest operations in the past few years. It targeted a network that had used Nigeria as a transit hub and a place to coordinate shipments from other countries. Authorities said they had been keeping an eye on the ring for months before coordinated raids stopped its activities.

The NDLEA said that the group had been smuggling cocaine, methamphetamine, and other expensive drugs through Nigerian airports and seaports. Reports from intelligence agencies said that shipments went through Brazil before getting to London and Sydney, and the money was laundered back through front businesses in Lagos and Abuja.

According to investigators, the cartel had a complex supply chain that relied on corrupt transport workers and fake shipping documents to avoid getting caught. The agency said that a number of people in the group had dual citizenship, which made it easy for them to move between jurisdictions.

According to a report by Vanguard news, NDLEA officers stormed warehouses in Lagos and stopped shipments at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport over the weekend as part of the operation. Authorities seized several packages of cocaine hidden in car parts and methamphetamine that looked like food.

Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (ret.), the chairman of the NDLEA, said that the agency had been getting better at catching “transnational cartels that use Nigeria’s location to run drugs around the world.” He said that the most recent arrests showed how well sharing intelligence with partner agencies abroad has been working.

Marwa said, “This syndicate has been around for years, but this time our operatives were able to get close to them with perfect coordination.” “It sends a strong message that drug barons won’t be able to hide out in Nigeria.”

NDLEA warns traffickers that security will be tighter

Authorities have confirmed that the suspects are now being questioned and could be sent back to partner countries where some of the drugs were supposed to go to stand trial. Several high-end homes connected to the cartel are also being looked into for money laundering.

The NDLEA said that more operations are planned as part of a larger effort to take down drug cartels that operate across borders. The agency is also calling for more cooperation with foreign partners and warning traffickers that Nigeria is no longer a safe place for drug trafficking.
