PDP Micro-Zoning Dispute Deepens Ahead of 2027

Key points

  • PDP micro-zoning crisis 2027 divides party leaders.

  • ADC gains strength after INEC backs David Mark.

  • Jonathan and Kwankwaso discuss possible alliance.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in fresh crisis over how to share key positions ahead of its November convention and the 2027 elections.

Party members in Lagos and Osun rejected the zoning plan and instead backed businessman Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as their presidential choice.

The fight is fiercest over the post of national chairman, a position that will play a major role in shaping PDP’s 2027 campaign.

Former Kano governor Ibrahim Shekarau, former Benue governor Samuel Ortom, and Olawepo-Hashim are all in the race.

PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor said final decisions will likely come at the October 15 NEC meeting.

Party elders warn that continued delays could weaken PDP, just as disputes did before the 2015 elections.

ADC gets boost with INEC recognition of Mark

While PDP struggles, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored a major win.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed former Senate President David Mark as its national chairman.

This ends weeks of leadership disputes inside ADC and puts the party in a stronger position for coalition talks.

Mark now leads a team that includes former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as secretary. Their job is to stabilize the party and prepare it for the 2027 race.

The recognition also strengthens talks between former President Goodluck Jonathan and former NNPP candidate Musa Kwankwaso, who may team up to challenge the ruling APC.

Jonathan weighs options as talks with Kwankwaso grow

Jonathan has not yet declared his 2027 plans. He is under pressure to choose between running on the PDP ticket or the now-stabilized ADC.

Sources say Jonathan leans toward PDP because of his long history with the party. But ADC may give him a cleaner path, especially with David Mark in charge.

Talks with Kwankwaso are also key. His influence in Kano and northern Nigeria could be decisive in 2027. Insiders say Jonathan is hopeful but still undecided.
