Nigeria and the United Kingdom have renewed their commitment to deepen cooperation across multiple fronts, aiming to deliver visible benefits to citizens of both nations.

Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, announced this in a statement released Tuesday by his media aide, Alkasim Abdulkadir. The move followed Tuggar’s meeting in London with British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to explore ways of strengthening bilateral ties.

Nigeria–UK relations focus on shared priorities in key areas

The meeting, held at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, covered shared priorities including trade, investment, education, migration, and climate action.

Tuggar said the engagement was part of Nigeria’s broader diplomatic effort to promote development and advance mutual interests on the global stage.

He described the talks as constructive and forward-looking, reflecting the deep-rooted friendship and shared democratic values that have long guided Nigeria–UK relations.

Relations take centre stage in London

Both ministers discussed global and regional issues, identified new avenues for economic growth, and reaffirmed cooperation in defence and governance.

They also highlighted the importance of people-to-people connections and praised the Nigerian diaspora for its role in strengthening bilateral ties.

The ministers agreed to maintain regular dialogue and monitor progress on areas of collaboration, reinforcing their commitment to long-term partnership.
