Police in Bauchi State have confirmed that one person died and five suspects were taken into custody after a confrontation between farmers and herders erupted into violence in Bursali, a village in Zaki Local Government Area. The clash, which occurred on Nov. 26, followed allegations that herders who arrived from Jigawa State crossed into local farmland, encroached on it, and damaged crops, according to the police.
Bauchi farmer-herder clash investigation
The Command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, said in a statement issued Saturday that tensions escalated quickly after the alleged trespass. Community members confronted the herders, and the encounter turned deadly. One herder was killed during the altercation. Wakil described the incident as a regrettable development that stemmed from a long-running strain between the two groups.
Once the distress call reached authorities, the Divisional Police Officer of the Zaki Division, SP Iliya Dogo, dispatched detectives to the area. Officers moved in to contain the situation and arrested five people tied to the clash. Wakil noted that investigators have begun examining how the confrontation unfolded and what might have triggered the violence beyond the reported destruction of farmland.
Security response to Bauchi farmer-herder clash
According to Punch, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered the case transferred to the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department. The move is intended to allow for a fuller review of what happened and to determine who is responsible. Aliyu also attempted to ease rising tension in the community, saying the Command is committed to preventing any further disorder while ensuring the investigation leads to accountability.
He called on residents to avoid retaliation, stressing that the area is now calm. Police officers have been deployed to prevent follow-up attacks, and authorities plan to profile the suspects before charging them.
The Command has been working to address recurring farmer-herder conflict in the state. In October, police met with stakeholders in Darazo Local Government Area to push for long-term peace efforts after repeated disputes in the region. That outreach included renewed calls for non-violent resolution methods, closer cooperation between communities, and a broader security strategy aimed at reducing the risk of similar clashes.
