The University of Nigeria, Nsukka has hired well-known writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, African Development Bank executive Kevin Chika Urama, and University of Chicago scholar James Robinson as visiting professors. This is part of a new effort to raise the school’s academic profile around the world.

Vice Chancellor Simon Ortuanya approved the appointments and sent official letters on December 18, 2025, according to a statement from the school on Wednesday.

University officials said that the visiting professors will teach, do research together, mentor students, and take part in strategic academic exchanges to help UNN become one of the best universities in the world.

Adichie, one of the most important literary figures of her generation, was chosen for this honour because of her work in literature, creative writing, and global intellectual discourse. The university said that having her there would greatly improve teaching and research in the arts and humanities.

Appointment of Chimamanda Adichie as a visiting professor

The appointment of Chimamanda Adichie as a visiting professor is expected to include lectures, academic activities, and direct mentoring for students and early-career academics.

University officials said that the appointment was a link between global literary practice and local academic growth. They also said that her involvement would encourage critical thinking and creative excellence in all fields.

Adichie is well-known for her novels Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, as well as her essays on power, culture, and identity.

Chimamanda Adichie’s appointment as a visiting professor broadens the scope

UNN also hired Kevin Chika Urama, a senior official at the African Development Bank and a development economist, because he is an expert in climate policy, development economics, and making decisions based on evidence.

The university said that the appointment of Chimamanda Adichie as a visiting professor, along with Urama’s selection, is part of a plan to connect humanities with policy-focused scholarship.

Urama’s job is to help improve teaching and research in economics, development studies, and public policy.

Global scholars work together more in the classroom

James Robinson, a political economist at the University of Chicago who is known for his work on institutions, governance, and economic development, was also named a visiting professor.

University officials said that his involvement would give students and faculty access to global research in political economy and make it easier for researchers to work together.

Inya Agha Egwu, the acting public relations officer, said that the appointments are in line with the vice chancellor’s promise to bring in scholars who are well-known around the world.

Egwu said that the visiting professorships help UNN achieve its goal of becoming a globally competitive institution by promoting the exchange of knowledge, strengthening international partnerships, and supporting UNN’s goal of reclaiming its legacy.

The new appointments bring the total number of visiting professors named by the current administration in December 2025 to four. This shows a renewed commitment to academic excellence and global relevance.
