KEY POINTS

  • NYSC plans standardised protocol for disabled corps members.
  • Workshop focuses on improving orientation course experience.
  • Pre-orientation training further includes practical post-camp skills.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to adopt a standardised protocol to ensure inclusive handling of corps members with disabilities during orientation and the service year. The initiative seeks to promote dignity, equality, and also full participation in all NYSC activities.

Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, Director-General of the NYSC, made the announcement on Wednesday in Jos at the opening of the 2026 pre-orientation workshop. He described the workshop as a strategic platform for planning and reflection ahead of the orientation course, which he called the “bedrock” of the service year.

NYSC pre-orientation workshop focuses on inclusion

The orientation course shapes service, forges character, and affirms citizenship,’ Nafiu said, noting that the NYSC must continually adapt the programme to reflect national realities, global best practices, and changing youth behaviour

The 2026 workshop, themed “Revamping the NYSC Orientation Course Experience as a Foundation for Impactful Service by Corps Members,” aligns with the scheme’s objective of producing disciplined, patriotic, and socially responsible citizens.

He further stressed that the NYSC actively includes all corps members and ensures that no one is left behind.

He also praised the professionalism of the camp and management staff, saying that the smooth running of the 2025 Batch ‘C’ orientation exercise showed that they could work well together and follow the rules of the institution.

Workshop provides new training modules

This year’s pre-orientation workshops will involve open-mic talks about new problems, better ways to run the camp, and better ways to work with stakeholders. Practical training modules will equip corps members with skills applicable beyond the camps.

Finally, Nafiu encouraged participants to engage actively in the workshop to ensure practical outcomes that strengthen orientation programmes across the country. The event began on January 13 and will conclude on January 16.
