KEY POINTS

  • Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally resigned from the NNPP, citing persistent internal crises and party divisions.
  • The governor said his decision was guided by public interest and aimed at preserving peace and unity in Kano State.
  • Yusuf’s exit, alongside several lawmakers and council chairmen, may reshape Kano politics amid speculation of a possible move to the APC.

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, ending weeks of speculation over his political future.

The resignation was confirmed on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who presented Yusuf’s letter to party officials. The letter was addressed to the chairman of the NNPP in Diso Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, and takes effect from January 23, 2026.

In the letter, Yusuf said he was leaving the party with gratitude, noting that the decision followed careful reflection and was driven by the need to preserve peace and stability in Kano State.

Internal crises cited as reason

The governor blamed his decision on what he described as persistent internal crises within the NNPP, including leadership disputes and unresolved legal battles.

He said the disagreements had widened divisions within the party and weakened its cohesion at both state and national levels, creating uncertainty for members and supporters.

According to Yusuf, the growing disenfranchisement of party members had led to cracks that now appear difficult to reconcile, making his continued stay in the party untenable.

Yusuf stressed that his resignation was guided solely by public interest and not motivated by bitterness or personal grievances.

He said stepping aside was necessary to protect the broader interests of Kano residents and allow governance to continue without political distractions.
