The project aims to fix severe asphalt failure, improve safety, and extend the lifespan of the busy bridge.
The Lagos State Government has announced a six-week closure and traffic diversion around the Apongbon Bridge to allow for critical repair works on deteriorated sections of the bridge.
The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi. According to the statement, the repairs will be executed by the Federal Ministry of Works and will target failed asphalt portions along the ramp and service lane linking Inner Marina to Apongbon Bridge, as well as sections of the bridge’s inbound and outbound lanes.
The temporary closure is scheduled to commence on Thursday, February 5, and will run until Thursday, March 19, 2026.
Repairs to Be Carried Out in Phases
Osiyemi explained that construction activities will be implemented in phases to ensure safety and minimise disruption to traffic flow.
Work will begin on the Apongbon service lane before extending to the main carriageway of the bridge.
“To ensure the safety of road users and facilitate the smooth execution of the works, sections of the affected roads will be temporarily closed to traffic,” the commissioner said.
He added that once repairs on the inbound section are completed, construction will shift to the outbound side of the bridge, with fresh traffic diversions introduced to accommodate the new phase.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To manage traffic during the closure, the government has outlined several alternative routes.
For inbound Apongbon traffic, motorists approaching from Inner Marina are advised to proceed to the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout, connect to Adeniji Adele Road, continue through Ebute Ero, and then use the ramp to Apongbon/Eko Bridge.
Vehicles coming from Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Third Mainland Bridge, and Victoria Island will connect their journeys through Apongbon Bridge to Eko Bridge.
During rehabilitation of the main carriageway, motorists from TBS, Third Mainland Bridge, and Victoria Island are expected to ramp down at the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout near UBA, proceed via Inner Marina, and connect to the Apongbon Bridge service lane before continuing to Eko Bridge.
For outbound traffic, motorists travelling from Eko Bridge to Inner Marina will be diverted through Ebute Ero Ramp, Adeniji Adele Road, and the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout. Traffic heading toward Outer Marina, CMS, Victoria Island, and Third Mainland Bridge will be diverted through Ebute Ero Ramp, Leventis, and Outer Marina or CMS.
Traffic management officers will be deployed throughout the construction period to guide motorists and ease congestion.
