Access Bank Plc has paid an emotional tribute to its former Group Managing Director, Dr Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe, marking two years since his tragic death, while also honouring the memory of his wife, Doreen, and their son, Chizi.

In a statement shared on the bank’s official X handle on Monday, Access Bank said the impact of Dr Wigwe’s leadership continues to resonate deeply within the institution and across Nigeria’s financial sector.

Reflecting on the loss, the bank said the absence of its former chief executive remains profoundly felt by staff, stakeholders, and the wider financial community.

“Two years on, the absence of Dr. Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe remains deeply felt across the organisation and the wider financial community,” the statement read.

Access Bank described Wigwe as a visionary leader whose courage, clarity, and unwavering commitment to excellence helped define the bank’s values and long-term strategic direction.

Tribute extends to late wife Doreen and son Chizi

Beyond honouring Dr Wigwe’s professional legacy, Access Bank also paid tribute to his wife, Doreen, and their son, Chizi, acknowledging the depth of loss their passing brought to those who knew them personally and professionally.

“As we remember Dr. Wigwe today, we also remember his beloved wife, Doreen, and their son, Chizi. Their loss is profound, and they remain forever in our hearts,” the bank stated.

The message underscored the family’s enduring place in the collective memory of the Access Bank community.

Access Bank noted that Dr Wigwe played a central role in shaping the institution into one of Nigeria’s most respected and influential financial organisations.

During his tenure, the bank expanded its footprint, strengthened corporate governance, and became widely recognised for innovation, integrity, and customer-focused service. His leadership, the bank said, left a lasting imprint not only on Access Bank but also on Nigeria’s broader banking and business landscape.

The bank emphasised that Wigwe’s legacy lives on through the standards he set and the future the institution continues to build.

According to Access Bank, his vision remains embedded in its corporate culture, guiding decision-making, leadership development, and its commitment to long-term growth and excellence.
